OMBRES MATELASSÉES DE CHANEL IN 'CHARMING' - A REVIEW

Below: the ingredients list.
The signature black lacquer compact comes with the usual black velvet pouch.

Below: the compact with respect to the size of my hand (I have small hands btw!)
The product description label on the bottom of the compact.
The large palette comes with a mirror and two applicators.  One of the applicators has a brush end with natural bristles good for lining the eyes and blending.  Handy for emergencies when you have no clean brush or for when you're travelling.  Due to the quality of the eye shadows, it's a breeze to create a decent look even when using these tiny, often ignored (even despised by some!) applicators!
Colours & Pigmentation
The palette consists of five eye shadows that have the iconic Chanel quilting embossed onto them.  From left to right above:
- Very pale, soft beige (satin)
- Light tan (matte)
- Warm bronze (shimmer/iridescent) that surprisingly applies less golden and darker and warmer
- Deep taupe brown (satin)
- Deep violet-plum - almost purple taupe (matte).

Although this is a fairly neutral palette, it kind of has a slightly edgy feel to it in a sense that most of the shades are cool-toned, there's a very warm bronze oddly thrown into the mix.  However, all the shades are very versatile and work together very well.  It's reminiscent of the three neutral shades in YSL City Drive Classy Palette (reviewed here).  I particularly like to use the warm bronze in the middle of my mobile lids and as an eye liner on my bottom lash line from the inner corner to two-thirds of the way out and blend it with one of the darker shades the rest of the way out to the outer corner.

I found all shades have excellent pigmentation for the type of texture they each have.

Swatches
All swatches are applied on medium, olive (~NC30) skin tone and photographed indoors using a strobe unless otherwise indicated.

Below: swatches of the palette from (left to right) darkest to lightest.
Below: shot in low light (without a strobe) to capture the shimmers/iridescence of the middle shade in particular.
Comparison Swatches
Below are comparison swatches of each shade in the 'Charming' Palette with other eye shadows in my collection that seemed the closest.  The YSL City Drive Classy Palette (reviewed here) contains 3 shades that are similar, but not exactly the same.  Also, the YSL's texture is made for either wet or dry application.  So, both are worthy of keeping.  I've also compared the middle shade to Burberry's Sheer Eye Shadow in 'Chestnut' No. 05.
Below: a comparison of the 4th and 5th shades from the palette with other shades.  In person, Nars 'Brumes' is deeper and more of a dark taupe, whereas Charming's has more of a cool-toned purple hue.  YSL's darkest shade is darker, cooler and almost has more of a plum undertone by comparison.
Texture & Application
The quality of the eye shadows are so good, and an excellent indication of this is when I can create a look easily with my clean fingers!  That is, a look I'm happy to go out in public with, of course ;)  Yes, this is usually my test for how good powder eye shadows are.  These babies almost do all the work for me!  Ultra fine, soft, silky, smooth texture.  Each shadow in the palette layer incredibly well and meld with the skin with hardly any effort.  If I had to pick which shade blended the most beautifully, I'd say it was the second to lightest shade.  The second to darkest shade is the only one perhaps that needed a little more effort in blending, but really...this is just if I had to be super picky!

Longevity
These eye shadows lasted 12+ hours on my eye lids which have normal skin condition (neither oily or dry).  There was barely any fading at the end of it, too! :D

Overall
Phenomenal quality.  Beautiful neutrals to suit many skin tones that can be intensified in no time to form a sexy, smoky eye for a night out.  Definitely worthy of a backup from my point of view.  Further, these work beautifully when layered with either of the Chanel Illusion D'ombre in 'Fatal' or 'Initiation' from the same collection.  Gorgeous!  ^_^
