7 Beyonce Documentaries to Watch If You Loved Netflix's Homecoming - Oprah Mag Posted: 16 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT Beyoncé just released her new documentary Homecoming, which on Netflix. It gave viewers an inside look into her history-making, two-weekend headlining performance at Coachella in 2018 and featured much of the actual concert—plus behind-the-scenes footage and personal videos resulting in a film that's going to be talked about for years to come. But this is far from the pop star's first foray into the world of documentaries. Since the beginning of her solo career, Beyoncé has often opted out of doing interviews and press, choosing instead to let fans inside both her creative process and her personal life through in-depth films that show the woman behind the artist. In many of those documentaries—like 2013's Life is But a Dream, which aired on HBO—Beyoncé even included footage from a video diary that she keeps and records on her laptop, including early shots of her pregnant with her daughter, Blue Ivy, messages she's sent to her husband, rapper Jay-Z, and her real-time reactions while hearing news headlines about herself play on the television. Homecoming is one of Queen Bey's most compelling projects yet, but in case you may have missed them, here's a look at the other 7 Beyoncé documentaries and concert specials the singer has already released. Fingers crossed we might eventually get one about her and Jay-Z's "On The Run II" tour. Homecoming (2019)Last year, Beyoncé made history by becoming the first Black woman to headline the music festival Coachella. She took that opportunity to honor Black culture, paying homage to America's historically Black colleges and universities with a homecoming-themed show. Her performances at both Coachella weekends went down in history, with the New York Times noting that "Beyonce is Bigger Than Coachella," writing that her performance was "a gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction." In her new Netflix documentary, Beyoncé brought viewers behind the scenes of that legendary performance—and provided glimpses of her personal life with Jay-Z, her 7-year-old, Blue Ivy, and her 22-month-old twins, Rumi and Sir. Watch At 3 A.M. ET on April 16 Life Is But a Dream (2013)In 2013, Beyoncé released her most revealing documentary to date via HBO—which she also produced and directed. Life is But a Dream chronicles the pop star in 90 minutes. The timeline begins not long after she has parted ways with her manager, her father Matthew Knowles, and is establishing herself as an artist with independence. She also opens up about experiencing a miscarriage, her relationship with Jay-Z, and, of course, the birth of Blue Ivy—who makes an adorable appearance at less than a year old. "People see celebrities and they have money and fame," Beyoncé says at one point, "but I'm a human being. I cry, I get scared, I get nervous just like everyone else. Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 (2011)This 2011 film is a look at how Beyoncé and her team prepared for a four-night stint at New York City's iconic Roseland Ballroom. The documentary also gives us a peek into the making of her album, 4, while also providing a raw look at the toll that the singer's unrelenting schedule has begun to take on her—and how that affects her personal life. But as we see in Live at Roseland, somehow, Beyoncé always manages to push farther and reach higher as a performer. Year of 4 (2011)For an MTV special in 2011, Bey opens up about taking a much-needed break from touring and recording before creating 4, her first studio album since parting ways with her manager-father.
