First Thoughts: A smoky sweet n' spicy incense perfume. I'm pretty certain this scent could work nicely in a wood polish. Granted a very fancy wood polish in a very nice home filled with encyclopedias and authentic artefacts from foreign adventures incense burns routinely whilst, the owner lights his or her cigar and thumbs through the latest periodical they've been annotating. Reserved, austere and methodical are what comes to mind. Sadly there's nothing scandalous here.
Thus, the reputation of Tabu precedes it. I was intrigued by Jean Carles first perfume (who later went on to create Miss Dior) as his sole instruction was to create a fragrance fit for a "whore". Sensual and shocking Tabu was to be a luscious melee of passion, unrelenting tenacious dynamism, and pleasure in the guise of an oriental floral. The type of pheromones a good girl could only dream of and the deceptively bad would truly need to refer to, in order to be believed - yes her allure was much more than her looks. How could something that was so inane cause such a scandal? Provocative and alluring Tabu would ensnare each suitor into her unwholesome lair, stripping away frivolous niceties in favour of unbridled and uninhibited desire. This was set to be the perfume of the century! Many would want her but in the end, the choice rested at the feet of Tabu.

A risque mirror (not mine) for a risque fragrance. I love the colour of the fragrance and the looks of the bottle. |
Top: Orange, Spices, Neroli, Bergamot, Corriander Medium: Clothes, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Narcissus Base: Sandalwood, Amber, Patchouli, Musk, Benzoin, Civet, Oakmoss, Vetiver, Cedar |
Nonetheless, this scent has a glimmer of hope in grubby slightly dirty spicy notes that speak of the edginess and fray in the tapestry of normality ... could this be the beginning of something exciting, something Tabu?
The more I spray it, the more I appreciate it for much more than the smoky sweet spicy muskiness.Tabu has been likened to other Oriental Florals like Coco Chanel, Opium by YSL etc. and whilst they may share the same fragrance category and some notes, Tabu very much stands firm in her own laced boots. Plus, for a fragrance that is merely a cologne, Tabu has outstanding strength and longevity on the skin and on clothing. In my recent trials, I've found that Tabu maintains the sprightly and interesting orange spicy notes better on my clothing, whereas on my skin Tabu loses that dynamic and becomes much softer, creamier and woodsy. It's early days but, I think its safe for me to say that I'm really beginning to like this. Yeah, it's not the feminine elixir of scandal I expected but, it is a nice robust no-nonsense type of fragrance which sadly is perhaps more me.
